What a JDM car is actually worth in Australia

The specification problem

Two cars wearing the same badge can be very different vehicles. Trim levels, factory options, drivetrain variants and model-year changes that never appeared in the Australian market all move the number, sometimes by tens of thousands of dollars.

Getting that right means reading the vehicle rather than the badge — chassis code, build date, factory equipment, and whether the car is what it is being presented as. It is the single most common reason a JDM valuation and a JDM asking price disagree.

We have specialised in imported Japanese, European and American market vehicles since 2004, which is the only real way to know these differences: having handled the cars.

Condition, originality and modification

For most JDM models the market now pays a clear premium for originality, and a well-documented unmodified example can be worth substantially more than a heavily modified one — even where the modifications cost more than the difference.

That is not a rule, though. Period-correct or high-quality modifications on some platforms hold value well, and a tastefully built car with receipts is a different proposition to one with unexplained work. What matters is that the assessment says which it is and why.

Rust, accident history and odometer credibility carry more weight on imports than on local cars, because the vehicle's earlier life happened somewhere the buyer cannot easily check.

What people use these valuations for

Agreed-value insurance is the most common. Insurers will rarely put a sensible number on a JDM car without an independent valuation, and the default they offer without one is usually well below what the vehicle would cost to replace.

Beyond that: finance and refinance, proving market value in a private sale, import duty and customs positions, family law proceedings, and deceased estates where a collection has to be valued fairly between beneficiaries.

Which Japanese vehicles do you value?

The full range of Japanese domestic market imports — Skyline, Supra, RX-7, Lancer Evolution, Impreza WRX and STI, NSX, Silvia, Chaser and the rest, along with prestige European and American market vehicles. Standard used vehicles too.

Why is a JDM valuation different from a normal one?

Because Australian price guides are built from locally delivered vehicles, and these cars were never sold here. Specification differences that never existed in the local market can move the value substantially, so the figure has to be argued from comparable sales and documented rather than looked up.

Will my insurer accept it for an agreed value?

Independent valuations are what insurers generally ask for before setting an agreed value on an import. Our certificates are prepared to professional standards accepted by Australian banks and insurers, and state the market value at a specific date.

Does modification increase or decrease the value?

It depends on the platform and the quality of the work. Originality carries a clear premium on most JDM models now, but well-executed period-correct modifications hold value on some. Supply photographs and receipts and the assessment will account for it either way.

Can you value a car I'm still bidding on in Japan?

Yes. We regularly value vehicles before they arrive, working from the auction sheet, VIN and photographs — which for most buyers is the point, since the number is needed before the money is committed.
